Pre-Raphaelites

One of the best things about living in London, from an art history students point of view at least, is all the museums and exhibitions one can go to. Today a friend and I went to Tate Britain to see their new exhibition called "Pre-Raphaelites: Victorian Avant-Garde". 

The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was a groupe of English painters, poets and critics working during the 1800's. It was founded in 1848 by the three leading members of the group, the painters John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rosetti and William Holman Hunt.

The Pre-Raphaelites thought that the art of their time was in decay. They rejected the idea that art had reached its aesthetic pinnacle with the italian painter Raphael (1483-1520) in the beginning of the 1500's. Therefore they looked to earlier art, the art before Raphael, hence their name Pre-Raphaelites. Instead of imitating the old masters, they brought their own style and aesthetic scheme to the art world of the Victorian era. Many of their paintings depict scenes from Shakespeare's plays, medieval myths, religious stories and depictions of Tennyson and Keats' poems.

The exhibition was really nice and very well curated. Each room had its own theme; Origins and manifesto, History, Nature, Salvation, Beauty, Paradise and Mythologies. It was the perfect exhibition for a couple of Pre-Raphaelite fans like me and my friend. Below you can see some pictures of our day.

I dag dro jeg og en venn til Tate Britain for å se den nye utstillingen deres som heter "Pre-Raphaelites: Victorian Avant-Garde". Det Pre-Rafaelistiske Brorskapet bestod av en gruppe engelske malere, poeter og kritikere som jobbet i løpet av 1800-tallet. Det ble grunnlagt i 1848 av de tre ledende medlemmene av gruppen, nemlig malerne John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rosetti og William Holman Hunt. Pre-Rafaelistene mente at kunsten i deres århundre var i forfall. De avviste ideen om at kunsten hadde nådd sitt estetiske høydepunkt med den italienske kunstneren Rafael (1483-1520) på begynnelsen av 1500-tallet. De gikk derfor lengre tilbake i tid til kunsten før Rafael, derav navnet til gruppen; Pre-Rafaelistene. Istedet for å imitere de gamle mesterne, brakte de sin egen stil og estetikk til kunstverdenen i den Viktorianske æraen. Mange av bildene deres framstiller scener fra Shakespeare sine stykker, myter fra middelalderen, religiøse historier og framstillinger av tennyson og Keats' dikt. Utstillingen var veldig fin og veldig godt kuretert. Hvert rom hadde sitt eget tema; Opprinnelse og manifest, Historie, Natur, Frelse, Skjønnhet, Paradis og Mytologier. Det var den perfekte utstillingen for to Pre-Rafaelismefans som meg og venninnen min.
