Christianity and the Arts

For those of you wondering what exactly this MA is all about I'll give you a short introduction here. First of all it is an MA that focuses on Christian art. It will explore how Christian texts and beliefs have been expressed in art during the last 2000 years. It also contains some art theory, which will focus on the idea of beauty in the Western Church. In addition to that I will also take a module on aesthetics.

The MA is thought in association with the National Gallery in London, but I'm not sure what this means in practice yet (I will of course update you later). Anyway, studying Art History in London is a privilege. With a lot of important galleries and museums nearby, one has easy access of many important artworks. Except  form the National Gallery, there is Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Wallace Collection, British Museum, National Portrait Gallery, The Royal Collection and The Royal Academy, to mention just a few. The MA is thought in association with the National Gallery in London, but I'm not sure what this means in practice yet (I will of course update you later). I have mainly focused on Christian iconography earlier in my studies and therefore it felt natural to continue pursuing this. I have studied themes like the virginity and sinlessness of Virgin Mary, the Annunciation, the Apocalyptic Woman and the Immaculate Conception, Saint Jerome and Memento Mori. As this is a very specific MA I am hoping I will be able to go even further in depth and really discover all the aspects of this particular "theme" in Art History.

For de av dere som lurer på hva denne mastergraden faktisk går ut på, vil jeg gi en kort introduksjon her. For det første er det en master som fokuserer på kristen kunst. Den utforsker hvordan kristne tekster og hvordan troen kommer til uttrykk i kunsten de siste 2000 årene. Den inneholder også litt kunsthistorisk teori, som blant annet tar for seg ideen om skjønnhet i den vestlige kirken. I tillegg til dette vil jeg også ta et emne om estetikk. Mastergraden blir undervist i samarbeid med the National Gallery i London, men jeg vet ikke helt hva dette går ut på i praksis ennå (jeg vil selvfølgelig oppdatere dere senere). Uansett er det et privilegium å studere kunsthistorie i London. Med mange store gallerier og museer i umiddelbar nærhet, har man tilgang til mange av kunsthistoriens viktigste verker. Bortsett fra the National Gallery har man også Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Wallace Collection, British Museum, National Portrait Gallery, The Royal Collection, Victoria and Albert Museum og The Royal Academy, bare for å nevne noen. Tidligere i studiene mine har jeg hovedsakelig fokusert på kristen ikonografi  og følte det derfor var naturlig å fortsette i denne retningen. Jeg har studert temaer som jomfruelighet og syndfrihet i forhold til Jomfru Maria, Bebudelsen, den apokalyptiske kvinnen og den ubesmittede unnfangelse, Sankt Hieronymus og Memnto Mori. Siden denne masteren er veldig spesifikt orientert, håper jeg at jeg vil få muligheten til å gå enda mer i dybden og oppdage enda flere aspekter innen dette ”temaet” i kunsthistorien.
